February 2022
Dear Friends of SANA,
2021 marked our 10th anniversary working in Santa Maria de Jesus. We are so proud of all we have been able to do in that town thanks to your generosity. Here are some of the highlights and our plans for
2022.
SANA Healthcare Clinic
From 2011 through 2021, we provided 51,605 patient care visits! Full Covid-19 protocols are in place to keep our patients and staff safe.
Goal for 2022: Enhance our women's programs. We
will renovate our clinic space to build two ob-gyn exam rooms and add an ob-gyn physician and nurse to our team.
SANA Preschool
Through 2021 we have provided education for 631 preschool-age children. During the past two years, we offered remote learning which was challenging since our children do not have access to computers, wifi, and sometimes electricity.
For 2022, we are able to offer limited, in-person classes for 4 and 5 year
old children as long as we maintain 4' space between their desk, have acrylic dividers on the desks, and provide masks. We have 71 children enrolled. They will study two days a week in person, two days at home, and be able to come in on Fridays for private tutoring, as
needed.
Scholarships
We are very excited about this NEW program for 2022. Our first class of preschoolers (25 children) finished elementary school in 2021. The Guatemalan government only requires six years of education so if the Mayan children want to go to
the 7th grade and beyond, they must pay.
Six of the 25 children were unable to pay the tuition fees so they were dropping out and going to work. SANA provided scholarships for these six children; all have been doing very well in school and we did not want to see them stop going to school. The cost averages $300 per child per year and covers tuition, books,
uniforms, and supplies. Their parents have agreed to allow the children to study and also will provide us with their grades. The children must maintain a C+ average or better; we will provide tutoring if needed.
Goal: Education will be their road out of poverty.
Community Assistance
We continue to provide supplemental food bags to patients that need nourishment. In 2021, we donated 312 bags. We will continue this program in 2022 as funds
allow.
Our largest assistance in the community was the renovation of the elementary school where our preschoolers attend.
As you can see, the building was falling apart; broken windows, roof leaks, mold, etc. None of the damage was caused by vandalism. It was due to damage from tropical storms, earthquakes, and lack of maintenance by the government.
SANA stepped in and look at the difference.
Thanks to YOU, over 1,000 children now will receive education in a safe environment.
Your generosity allows SANA to provide invaluable assistance in Santa Maria de Jesus. Remember ... a
private benefactor cavers all of our overhead expenses, so your donations have gone directly to these programs.
